The Mississippi Delta is a region rich in history and traditional culture. This video and written guide for students and teachers looks at the heritage of the Delta through the eyes of five young students. Join the student researchers as they learn about blues music, soul food cooking, quilting, catfish farming, oral traditions and Chinese culture in the Delta. And, find out how you can become a community researcher, too!

The community research methods outlined and demonstrated in Discovering Our Delta are powerful tools for the teaching and learning of language arts, social studies, music, art, mathematics, science, and home economics.

Discovering Our Delta is produced by the Smithsonian Institution Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage with the support of the Phil Hardin Foundation, the Mississippi Arts Commission and the Smithsonian Education Outreach Fund. This project is a direct result of fieldwork conducted for the Mississippi Delta program of the 1997 Smithsonian Folklife Festival.
